What Is Silica Gel?

We can cater for all of your silica gel needs. We offer a bespoke, made-to-measure service as well as a huge supply of ready made sachet sizes.

What is silica gel? Silica gel is the form of silicon dioxide which is synthetically made as hard, irregular granules, which look like crystals. They can also be made in the form of beads. These tiny 2 to 5 millimetres diameter beads, and the very light microporous structure of which consists of interlocking cavities which can give the silica gel a very high surface area. It is thought that these granules often have a surface area of around 800 mē per gram.

In the dry form silica gel has a very low water vapour pressure. This makes it a very high capacity desiccant. Water molecules are drawn to the internal surface from the surrounding air. As long as the container is hermetically sealed, silica gel is able to effectively dry the air within the container or chamber. When the water vapour pressure has been equalised, no more net adsorption of water can occur and there is equal exchange of water vapour with the atmosphere.

In very high relative humidity conditions, for example above 50%, perishable goods are under a real threat from damage from airborne bacteria and moulds. If there is no desiccant in place there is a real danger that the goods will be completely useless when they arrive at their destination after prolonged periods of storage.

What is silica gel? I hope this article is going some way to describing the real beauty of this product. During its action, there is no chemical reaction or side effects and there is very little interaction with the product that it is guarding.

In fact silica gel is able to absorb up to 40% of its own weight in water vapour this is 35% greater than other typical desiccants such as clays. It is inert, non toxic, and it can be easily reactivated by gently heating to drive the adsorbed moisture away. It is also completely non flammable.
